Press Center of the Year of Teacher, organized by AGT Communications, opens first series of press events, devoted to the modernization of the Russian educational system The series of events will be organized at Interfax on the monthly basis.   

On March 30, 2009 the Interfax central office hosted the press conference, devoted to the experiment launched to test the new training course “Fundamentals of religious culture and secular ethics.”

The press-conference was attended by Isaak Kalina, the Deputy Educational Minister, Archbishop of Zarai Mercury, the chairman of the Religious Education and Catechisms department of the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Marat Murtazin, the deputy chairman of the Council of Russian muftis and rector of Moscow Islam University, and Vladimir Chimitdorzhiev, the rector of the Aginsk Buddhism Academy.

Also present at the conference were Marianna Shakhnovich, the chief of the religious philosophy department of St. Petersburg State university, and Alexander Kondakov, the CEO of Prosveshchenie publishing house.

"Making schoolchildren aware of world’s main religions and secular ethics will undoubtedly raise their level of mutual respect and self-respect, if not instantly then in the long run,” Isaak Kalina told the press-conference, while all the speakers agreed that the main achievement of the project is that the non-religious part of society, represented by the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Education, has reached accord with its religious part. In other words, it is not important, which training course the schoolchildren might select, because in any case it will provide them with the best knowledge of all critical constituents of humankind’s culture.

Thee Basics of Religious Culture and Secular Ethics course is to be taught at the transition from primary to secondary school – the fourth quarter of the fourth year and the first quarter of the fifth year. It will supplement the society oriented subject “The surrounding world” and preceded the course of history, which starts in the fifth year of school studies. The new course will be taught in 19 regions of Russia as part of the launched experiment. It will consist of six variants, from which the students will select: the fundamentals of the orthodox culture, the fundamentals of Islamic culture, the fundamentals of Buddhism, the fundamentals of world religions and secular ethics. Each of the course variants will be taught by specially-trained teachers.
